REFORESTATION
Restructuring nature

Some communes in south-west Togo offer a landscape of vast bare hills. In many areas, deforestation has led to the almost total disappearance of trees and a radical deterioration in soil fertility, with only grassy savannahs colonizing the land today.
At the same time, demand for timber and fuel in Togo continues to grow, fuelled by strong demographic growth and a scarcity of natural woodland. The effects of deforestation are also being felt on the springs that feed the rice fields, which are vital for families.
Against this backdrop, where the bulk of agricultural activity has gradually been concentrated in the lowlands, Patience Asso-Togo's pilot project aims to stimulate planting practices for the reforestation and development of unproductive hills. Working with the owners of these lands, we are experimenting with solutions to meet both environmental constraints and the concerns of households for their wood needs (mainly timber).
Our missions:
- Understand the causes of deforestation in these areas.
- Experiment with different types of species and germination techniques.
- Setting up inventory tools.
